This book aims to provide a basic introduction to the rules of Qur’anic recitation. Tajwīd can be defined as the knowledge and application of the rules of Qur’anic recitation as practised by Prophet Muhammad. It also means to pronounce the letters with the correct pronunciation according to those rules. Moreover, it means to know where to pause and start. Prophet Muhammad taught his Companions the Qur’an as it was revealed to him by the Angel Jibril. He transmitted correct recitation to them and, in the same way, they taught and passed the science on to us. Throughout the ages, the best way to learn the recitation of the Qur’an properly has been by listening to a qualified teacher. Any book on the subject is not sufficient on its own, and can only be a guide.
